What do you do with 'bad books'?

Say you're reading a book that you don't particularly like, do you keep reading? Do you take a break and then go back to reading? Or do you just stop reading it altogether?

For me, I just have to finish a book I've started, no matter how long it takes me I just have to finish it.
I remember once when I was a little kid I lost one of my books, I found it months later and finished it. I was reading The Host by Stephenie Meyer a while ago and I was at a boring patch so I took a break from it for a couple of months and then finished it.
Sometimes I'll take little breaks from reading the book if it's boring or if it needs returned to the library etc. but I will always finish a book. I don't think I've ever not finished a book. I'm a little obsessive about that.

What about you? What do you do?

  1. I usually finish most books I start, but there are a handful that I've just set aside and never come back to. I've been lucky that I rarely pick anything up that I absolutely end up hating!

  2. Sometimes I take a break, but other times I just pass the book along. I usually read at least 100 pages of a book before I totally give up. This doesn't happen often, though. Maybe a few times a year. Most books have some redeeming quality or character that makes me want to keep reading!

  3. I used to be like that, having to finish a book. Then I started reviewing and I just don't have the time to try and slog through a book I can't stand when my pile is so huge. I have a time limit when reading, usually about a week. If it takes me longer and I'm not even halfway through it yet, I stop reading. If I can't even get 50 pages in, I'll stop. My bother yourself with reading something you don't really like when there are so many other worthwhile books out there eager to grab your time?

  4. I don't finish books that I don't like, even if I've spent a lot of money on them, it's just not worth the time for me!

  5. Same thing Like you, i will finish what i've started. even it'll take more than 6 months to finish a book :)

I remember that i wanted to give up reading The Hunger Games. Yeap, the first and second chapter were so slow for me, it took me to a month to finish those chapters, but I'm GLAD that i finished the book, coz i'm hooked, I had finished Catching Fire in Two days and waiting for MOCKINGJAY to be relased soon.

  6. My mom always told me that I should finish a book, no matter what, maybe the ending is fantastic and you will think about the book in another way.

  8. I feel absolutely confident in abandoning a book that no longer holds my interest. I don't feel compelled to finish it...it's something I teach my students as well. That way I'm not wasting time with a book I don't like and can get to another book that will capture my interest!

  9. I always try to finish all books I read, even if it takes months and I have to force myself to do it. But sometimes I just can't finish books, there's nothing to keep me interested (or get interested in the first place)

  10. So far I have managed to finish all of the books I started - I'm like that with films too, even if it's terrible I have to know how it ends LOL. There were a couple of books I read this year that I really didn't think I'd be able to finish but I got there in the end reading a couple of chapters in between other books I was really enjoying.

  11. I used to be that and always finish the book. But now my to be read list is huge and I don't want to waste my time with a so so book. But most books I like. I think I've not finished, like two books.
