Dark Calling by Darren Shan

Dark Calling by Darren Shan
Published: London : HarperCollin's Children's, 2009
Series: Book 9, Demonata

Events take an unexpected turn in this ninth awesome foray into the worlds of the Demonata..."I know it's ridiculous. Lights can't whisper. But I swear I heard a voice calling to me. It sounded like static to begin with, but then it came into focus, a single word repeated over and over. Softly, slyly, seductively, insistently. Come!" The Disciples are being manipulated by beings older than time. Only Kernel Fleck knows that something is wrong. But he is in the grip of a creature who cares nothing for the fate of humanity. Voices are calling to him from the darkness and he's powerless to resist. Kernel has already been to hell and back. Now he's about to go further!

I really like the Demonata series as a whole. Some books are absolutely great and some aren't so great so the series as a whole balances out to be one of the best series' of books ever written. dark Calling is one of the books in the Demonata series that I really love.

As far as the story line goes I was hooked. Dark Calling was definitely my kind of book. So far the series has been mostly fantasy and horror but Dark Calling brings in the Science Fiction. Which is something that I really love to pieces.

I loved all the descriptions of the different aliens that were in the book.

The characters were all fairly decent. Out of the Demonata series Kernel is my favourite and it was good to finally have another book written in his perspective.

One thing I really loved about this book was how almost everything was revealed and we finally learnt about all the mysteries that had been developing throughout the book.

Overall, Dark Calling is a superb read that has you flying through the pages at an astounding rate. There is a bit of horror in the form of violence in there but overall the violence isn't that bad. In my opinion the violence is what makes this series an interesting one.

I'd recommend this one to fans of horror, magic or science fiction. I would suggest reading the other books in the series first however, or you might be a bit confused.

Lastly, the last book in the series is due out in a couple of months and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. Lets just hope it's a good one.

  1. That cover is pretty scary. I've never read a Shan book before.
